FAQs – Before Treatment
Q: What is SPMU?
A: Semi-Permanent Makeup, also known as Cosmetic Tattooing or Micropigmentation, offers a long-lasting solution to enhance your natural beauty. At Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, our treatments range from subtle enhancements that delicately improve your facial features to the beautiful imitation of your favourite makeup looks.
Q: What is Medical Tattooing?
A: Medical Tattooing is an advanced form of SPMU focused on restoring confidence and improving the appearance of areas affected by medical conditions. At Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, we understand the profound impact rebuilding a person's body image can have. Our Medical Tattooing services provide solutions for individuals experiencing hair loss (alopecia), recovering from burns or scarring, undergoing breast reconstruction (nipple and areola restoration), and addressing other conditions.
Q: What Cosmetic and Medical Tattooing treatments are available?
A: Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic offers a comprehensive range of Cosmetic and Medical Tattooing treatments to address diverse needs. Our services include: Microblading, Ombré Brows, Powder Brows, and Combination Brows, Eyeliner Tattoo, Lip Tattoo: Lip Liner, Lip Blush, or full Lip Tint, Scar Camouflage, Nipple and Areola Reconstruction, Scalp Micropigmentation for alopecia; and more.
Q: What does Cosmetic Tattooing treatment involve?
A: Your journey at Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic begins with a thorough consultation. We will discuss your desired outcome, assess your skin tone, hair colour, and facial features, and consider your lifestyle and personal style. Cara, founder and expert cosmetic artist, will then create a custom pigment blend to perfectly complement your unique features. The treatment itself involves gently implanting microscopic particles of pigment into the skin using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. We prioritise your comfort and safety throughout the entire process.
Q: Will my SPMU look natural?
A: Yes! Achieving a natural-looking result is our top priority. At Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, we believe in enhancing your natural beauty, not masking it. Cara is highly skilled in creating subtle, realistic effects that blend seamlessly with your features. Browse our portfolio to see examples of our work and how we tailor each treatment to suit individual preferences and skin tones.
Q: How long does Cosmetic Tattooing last?
A: The longevity of your Cosmetic Tattoo can vary depending on individual factors such as skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, and genetics. While results usually last between one to five years, we recommend colour refresher boosts to maintain the vibrancy and definition of your tattoo. We offer discounted rates on colour boosts for clients who return within 6 to18 months of their initial treatment.
Q: Can I have Cosmetic Tattooing if I’ve had cosmetic surgery?
A: Yes, Cosmetic Tattooing can often complement cosmetic surgery procedures. However, it's essential to allow sufficient healing time between surgery and your SPMU appointment. Please contact Cara to discuss your specific situation and receive personalised advice.
Q: What if I have medical issues?
A: Your safety is our utmost concern. Before any treatment, we will conduct a comprehensive review of your medical history. While most individuals are suitable candidates for SPMU, certain medical conditions may contraindicate treatment. We will discuss any potential risks or concerns with you during your consultation.
Q: Are there risks associated with Cosmetic Tattooing?
A: While Cosmetic Tattooing is generally safe, it's essential to be aware of potential risks. At Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, we adhere to the highest standards of hygiene and safety to minimise these risks. Potential risks may include allergic reactions, infection, scarring, or undesired colour changes. We will thoroughly discuss these risks with you during your consultation and answer any questions you may have.
Q: Can I drink alcohol before my treatment?
A: To ensure optimal pigment retention, we advise against consuming alcohol the night before or on the day of your treatment. Alcohol can thin the blood and interfere with the healing process.
FAQs – Treatments:
Brow Treatments
Q: Should I bring my current eyebrow pencil to my appointment?
A: Yes! Bringing your eyebrow pencil allows us to see the colours you're most comfortable with, helping us to tailor your SPMU to your desired look.
Q: Do you offer Hair Stroke Brows, Powder Brows, or both?
A: At Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, we specialise in creating ultra-realistic Semi-Permanent Eyebrows. Our primary technique focuses on replicating individual, natural-looking hair strokes, perfect for clients with existing brow hair or those seeking to create a natural brow from scratch. We are also skilled in creating a more solid, filled-in look (Powder Brows) if that's your desired style.
Q: Can I wax my eyebrows before my Semi-Permanent Brow appointment?
A: Yes, you can. However, it's essential to allow your skin sufficient time to recover. We recommend waxing at least 48 hours before your scheduled eyebrow treatment.
Q: How long should I wait after electrolysis before getting my eyebrows tattooed?
A: To ensure proper healing and optimal results, we advise waiting a minimum of five days after electrolysis before undergoing a Semi-Permanent Eyebrow treatment.
Q: Will all my existing eyebrow hair be shaved off before the procedure?
A: Not at all! We actually prefer to work with your natural eyebrow hair whenever possible. Preserving your existing brow hair allows us to create a more natural and seamless result, blending the Semi-Permanent Makeup with your own features. In most cases, there's no need to tweeze or remove any hair before your appointment. We aim to enhance your natural brow shape, not replace it entirely.
Lip Treatments
Q: Can I bring my favourite lipstick for colour matching?
A: Absolutely! If you have a favourite lipstick shade, you'd love to see replicated in your lip tattoo, please bring it with you to your appointment. This allows Cara, our skilled Cosmetic Tattoo artist, to custom-blend a pigment that closely matches your desired colour.
Q: Does SPMU cause cold sores?
A: Semi-Permanent Makeup itself does not cause cold sores. However, the stimulation from the Lip Tattoo procedure can trigger an outbreak if the herpes simplex virus (the cause of cold sores) is already dormant in your system.
Q: I’m prone to cold sores. Can I still get a Lip Tattoo?
A: Yes, you can! However, if you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex), it's crucial to take preventative measures. We strongly recommend consulting your GP or chemist for advice on appropriate antiviral medication to help prevent an outbreak. To minimise the risk, we advise taking the prescribed medication for one week before and one week after your Lip Tattoo procedure.
Q: I currently have a cold sore. Can I proceed with my Lip Tattoo appointment?
A: Unfortunately, no. If you have an active cold sore outbreak, we must postpone your Lip Tattoo appointment until the area is fully healed. Tattooing over a cold sore can lead to complications and affect the result. Please contact us to reschedule once the outbreak has completely cleared.
Q: Can I have a lip wax or bleaching treatment before my Lip Tattoo?
A: We advise against undergoing any lip waxing or bleaching treatments for at least two weeks prior to your Lip Tattoo appointment. These treatments can cause skin sensitivity and irritation, which may compromise the Lip Tattoo procedure and results.
FAQs – Eyeliner Treatments
Q: Do I need to remove my eye makeup before my Eyeliner Tattoo treatment?
A: Yes, you will need to remove eye makeup before any eye treatment. However, we do need to see your style, so please wear your usual make-up for the appointment.
Q: Should I bring my favourite eyeliner pencil to my Eyeliner Tattoo appointment?
A: Absolutely! This allows Cara, our specialist Cosmetic Tattoo Artist to perfectly match the pigment for your eyeliner tattoo, ensuring you achieve your ideal shade and style.
Q: I recently had my eyelashes tinted or permed. Can I still get an Eyeliner Tattoo?
A: Yes, you can still proceed with your eyeliner tattoo. We recommend scheduling any eyelash tinting or perming treatments at least one week before your eyeliner tattoo appointment or waiting two weeks after the procedure. This helps to avoid any potential interference with the healing process and ensures optimal results for both treatments.
FAQs – Medical Tattoo Treatments
Q: Medical conditions and Cosmetic Tattooing: Is treatment right for you?
A: Undergoing treatment for a medical condition raises important questions about the suitability of Medical Tattooing or |SPMU. At Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, your safety and well-being are our top priorities.
While certain conditions, such as pregnancy or infectious diseases, are contraindications for these procedures, other medical conditions require careful evaluation. The severity and type of your condition, as well as any medications you are taking, can all influence whether treatment is appropriate. During your initial consultation at Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, we will thoroughly discuss your medical history. This will enable Cara to make an informed decision together about the best course of action for you.
FAQs –The Procedure
Q: Will it hurt?
A: At Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, we understand that concerns about pain are common for those considering Semi-Permanent Makeup. We want to assure you that our procedures are designed with your comfort in mind. Cara utilises state-of-the-art, specialist equipment that is refined and gentle. Our advanced techniques minimise discomfort. In fact, many clients report that the sensation is comparable to eyebrow tweezing.
Lip Sensitivity: Lips can be more sensitive due to increased blood supply and surface area. We proactively manage this by applying topical numbing cream throughout the lip tattooing process to minimise any discomfort.
Q: How long will the treatment take?
A: Treatment times vary depending on the complexity and detail of the desired result. While some procedures can be completed in as little as one hour, we recommend allocating 2 to 3 hours for your appointment. Your treatment will also include a follow-up appointment to review the final healed colour. This usually takes place 4 to 6 weeks after your initial treatment and lasts approximately 30 minutes.
Q: Can I train as a SPMU or Medical Tattoo artist?
A: Yes! Cara's Academy offers comprehensive training programmes in both Semi-Permanent Cosmetics and Medical Tattooing. Learn from Cara and her Elite Team. Click here to find out more.
Q: Will you need to remove any of my natural brow hairs?
A: No, Cara will work with your existing brow hairs. The common belief that brow hairs need to be shaved for Microblading, or Eyebrow Tattoos is a myth. We only remove brow hairs if there is any stray growth that needs tidying, which we address through tweezing or plucking.
Q: My eyes are sensitive. I’m worried about blinking and my eyes watering during the treatment. Is that a problem?
A: It's perfectly normal to be concerned about eye sensitivity. Blinking and watery eyes are common, especially for first-time clients. However, we have extensive experience working with sensitive eyes and take precautions to ensure your comfort and safety. We have found that blinking and watering do not affect the procedure.
Q: Will my eyes swell a lot after the treatment?
A: Swelling after Eyeliner Tattooing is usually minimal, lasting 12 to 24 hours. Applying ice packs can further minimise any swelling.
Q: Will I need someone to drive me home after having an Eyeliner Tattoo?
A: While it's possible your eyes might be slightly watery post-treatment, we recommend, as a precaution, that you arrange for someone to drive you home after an eye treatment. This ensures your comfort and safety.

FAQs – After Treatment: What to Expect
Q: What will my new Cosmetic Tattoo look like right after the treatment?
A: Immediately following your appointment at Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, the treated area will appear more intense in colour. For Brow and Eyeliner Tattoos, the pigment will look darker than your desired healed result. Lip Blush Tattoos will appear much brighter and more saturated. This initial intensity will soften within a few days as the skin heals. Some slight swelling is normal, especially with Lip and Eyeliner treatments. Lips may also experience some chapping.
Q: When can I wear makeup after my Cosmetic Tattoo procedure?
A: To ensure optimal healing and prevent infection, we recommend using mineral-based cosmetics immediately after your treatment. However, avoid applying traditional makeup to the treated area until it is fully healed.
Q: What aftercare is required for my new tattoo?
A: At Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic, we provide detailed aftercare instructions and a specialised aftercare balm to promote healing and protect your investment. Following these simple steps is crucial for achieving the best possible results with your Semi-Permanent Makeup or Medical Tattoo.
Q: How long does it take for a Cosmetic Tattoo to heal?
A: Healing times vary from person to person. Generally, the surface skin heals within 3 to 7 days, while complete healing below the surface takes 10 to 14 days. Factors like age, skin type, and overall health can influence healing speed.
Q: Will I need to take time off work after my appointment?
A: You should be able to return to work immediately after your Cosmetic Tattoo procedure. Any initial redness or swelling is usually mild and manageable.
Q: Can I donate blood after getting a Cosmetic Tattoo?
A: According to guidelines from the National Blood Service, you must wait 4 months after your Cosmetic Tattoo procedure before donating blood. This is a standard precaution.
Q: Can I get anti-ageing injections (e.g., Botox) or cosmetic surgery after my treatment?
A: It's best to consult with your therapist or surgeon regarding the timing of anti-ageing injections or cosmetic surgery after your Cosmetic Tattoo. Certain procedures can alter the shape of your lips or eyebrows, potentially affecting the appearance of your tattoo.
Q: Is it safe to have an MRI scan after getting a Cosmetic Tattoo?
A: Yes, it is generally safe to have an MRI scan. However, it's crucial to inform the MRI technician about your tattoo, when you had it done, and its location.
Q: Can I undergo laser hair removal after a Cosmetic Tattoo?
A: Laser hair removal can sometimes fade or alter the colour of Lip and Brow Tattoos. If you're planning laser hair removal in these areas, inform your laser technician that you have SPMU.
Q: What activities should I avoid immediately after treatment?
A: To ensure proper healing, avoid the following:
- Applying makeup (except mineral makeup as advised)
- Exposure to extreme heat, cold, or excessive moisture (saunas, swimming, etc.)
- Kissing (for lip tattoos)
- Using petroleum-based ointments (unless specifically recommended)
We will provide you with a comprehensive list of aftercare instructions for your specific treatment at Cosmetic Tattoo Clinic.
Q: Can I go on a sunshine holiday soon after my Cosmetic Tattoo?
A: Direct sun exposure can negatively impact the healing process and the results of your Cosmetic Tattoo. We recommend waiting 4 to 6 weeks after your final retouch appointment before going on a sunny holiday. Always use a high-SPF sunscreen on the treated area.
FAQs – Specific Treatments
Q: Will my brows look very dark after Microblading?
A: Yes, it's normal for brows to appear significantly darker and sharper immediately after Microblading. Don't worry – this is temporary! The colour will soften and lighten as the skin heals, usually for up to 10 days.
Q: Are there any foods I should avoid after a Lip Tattoo?
A: Avoid spicy and salty foods until the area is fully healed. These can irritate and prolong the healing process. Drinking liquids through a straw is also recommended.
Q: What can I expect my lips to look and feel like immediately after a Lip Tattoo?
A: You may experience some swelling and redness. Over the next 2 to 5 days, you might also notice tenderness, flaking, dryness, and further swelling. If you're not feeling your best, the healing process may take longer, and symptoms may be more pronounced.
FAQs – Additional Appointments
Q: Will I need a follow-up or touch-up appointment?
A: A follow-up appointment 6 to 12 weeks after your initial treatment is normal.
Q: Will I need multiple sessions for Medical Tattoo treatments?
A: Medical Tattoo treatments can require multiple sessions to achieve the desired outcome. The number of sessions depends on individual circumstances and the complexity of the treatment. This will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
On the first day following your semi-permanent makeup treatment, it's essential to gently bathe the area thoroughly. You can use a sterile solution such as TCP, warm salty water, or an antiseptic wipe for this purpose. Effectively cleansing any residual fluid that may have persisted following your treatment will help scabbing heal slightly faster. This is perfectly normal on Day 1 and signifies that the appropriate depth within the skin has been achieved. The secret to keeping your beauty treatment fabulous is to follow our aftercare guidance for semi-permanent makeup.
FAQs – Aftercare Guidance: Dos and Don’ts
- Keep areas dry and gently use a washcloth to cleanse the area until the product naturally exfoliates, which typically occurs within 3 to 7 days. Always avoid splashing water on the area; instead, gently pat it dry.
- Don’t have hot baths; use hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, or participate in hot yoga. In fact, avoid any activities that cause you to break out in a sweat.
- PRO TIP: Position the showerhead to cleanse your face separately for a refreshing experience.
- Refrain from touching the area completely! There is a possibility of developing an infection. It's important to avoid any picking, scratching, exfoliating, or rubbing of the treated area.
Once the area begins to flake:
- Avoid exposing areas to UVA or UVB rays; sunbeds are a definite no-go! If you choose to use sunbeds, be sure to protect your treatment area.
- Apply SPF 50 generously; sunbathing is not recommended.
- It's important to avoid any picking, scratching, exfoliating, or rubbing of the treated area
- If you are planning on getting any beauty treatments, it’s best to ask your cosmetic makeup technician to avoid scrubs or peels on the area.
- Anti-wrinkle injections require a two-week interval between sessions, and you should allow a four-week interval between fillers for flawless results.
Remember, if you don’t follow our aftercare guidance for Semi-Permanent Makeup, your treatment may not last as long. If this is the case, you'll be booking touch-ups more frequently. In addition, if this is your first time having SPMU, you may need an extra touch-up (a fee will apply).
